Hi Craig, Others,

I do a lot of high-volume encoding events for corporate clients - 10+ simultaneous live channels of content originating from trade show convention floors, breakout rooms, etc., all of which get streamed live and archived/posted to VOD. We do quick-n-dirty edits by cutting off the heads and tails via 'direct-stream cutting'. What's that, you ask? Raw power 2 1 35.

To accomplish this without re-encoding and getting involved in the costly, time-consuming NLE methods, we had to use Wirecast as the 'switcher' and streaming software, use the virtual camera to send to FMLE for archive creation (save to file), use adobe's cmd tool to convert from .f4v to .mp4 archives, then use a clip editor called BoilSoft to trim heads and tails off. We used FMLE for archiving because back in the Wirecast 4/5 days, the output files were..unstable, unreliable, uneditable. Plus, they were not keyframe-aligned. FMLE gave us very reliable outputs that worked (almost) every time with BoilSoft. But..BoilSoft never worked as ubiquitously on the Mac as it did on Windows and was fraught with issues, so we eventually searched onward..

We moved to MPEG Streamclip for cutting as development of BoilSoft ceased. MPEG Streamclip used to enable an in-point and out-point set, then 'save as', and it would save the trimmed clip in seconds without re-rendering or encoding. Now, MPEG Streamclip is stale. I'm getting lip sync issues with the output files. The 'Export' options take too long for this fast-paced, high-volume environment. And it tends to freeze Wirecast for whatever reason when saving. The limitation of both of these is only being able to trim at a keyframe. But, we manipulated our content to suit that - start each session on a static title slide, etc.

Using these processes, we previously had a workflow in place that would allow us to do multiple (10+) channels of content, with each encoder operator being able to process 3 bitrate iterations of every session in between sessions. We were doing 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off for 8-9 hours a day, and getting every file posted to the client's Akamai NetStorage within an hour of completion.

I say all that to say this - Boilsoft still *mostly* works on Windows, but does anyone know of a modern, up-to-date replacement for BoilSoft or MPEG Streamclip for trimming these types of files?
